Westview community responds to student’s death

TOPEKA — Westview High School has announced the death of an 11th-grade student.

Gwendolynn “Gwen” Deianara Owsley died Friday, according to a school news release.

Her father, Rodger Owsley, posted on Facebook: “Gwen passed October 27th from myocarditis. We have always been so proud of her. But never realized till this week how many people’s lives she has touched and how many of you loved her. I know she loved you all too.”

Gwen was involved in a number of school activities, including track and field, soccer, cross country, FFA, student council and choir.

“Gwen Owsley was an exceptional individual who touched the lives of many with her kindness, talent, and dedication,” the release stated. “The loss of any student is a tragic event that deeply affects our students, staff, and community. We have grief counselors available to assist students and staff in coping with this loss and offer a safe space for them to share their feelings and memories of Gwen.”

A memorial service will take place at New Life Fellowship Monday, the release added.
