National Youth Heart Screening Day.

Parent Heart Watch and 24 Member Organizations Across the Nation to Hold First-of-Its-Kind Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Event
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) strikes 23,000 youth each year affecting many with undiagnosed heart conditions that are found in 1 in 300 seemingly healthy children and young adults. Typical well-child checkups and preparticipation physical evaluations miss up to 90% of youth at risk. Parent Heart Watch and its member organizations have advocated across two decades for better prevention standards through comprehensive heart screenings and cardiac emergency preparedness wherever youth congregate.
National Youth Heart Screening Day is a Call-to-Action: Every Kid. Every Heart.
Our goal is to amplify awareness about the reality of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in children and young adults, the importance of heart screenings for early detection of risk factors that may lead to sudden cardiac arrest/death. Also, knowing how to recognize and respond to a cardiac emergency by performing hands-only CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) to increase the chance of survival from sudden cardiac arrest. National Youth Heart Screening Day will impact an estimated 10,000+ youth across 15 states.
Heart Screening Consists Of:
- Online Registration
- Personal & Family Health History
- Height, Weight & Blood Pressure Measurements
- 12-lead Electrocardiogram (ECG)
- Auscultation (listening to heart)
- Limited Echocardiogram for those with abnormal results or risk factors
- Results Interpreted by Physician
- Registrants will learn Hands-Only CPR & AED use
Screening protocol may vary per organization. Screening event does not establish a patient/doctor relationship.

Frequently Asked Questions
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating. It strikes people of all ages who may seem to be healthy, even children and teens.
When SCA happens, the person collapses and doesn’t respond or breathe normally. They may gasp or shake as if having a seizure.
SCA leads to death in minutes if the person does not get help right away. Survival depends on people nearby calling 911, starting CPR, and using an AED, if available, as soon as possible.
Studies show half to three-quarters of youth stricken by SCA had a warning sign or family heart history that was missed or misdiagnosed, which means that for the other portion of those stricken, the cardiac arrest was the first indication of a heart abnormality. This is why Parent Heart Watch and member organizations advocate for preventative heart screening.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends heart screening at least every three years and especially when entering middle, junior high and high school, however, guidelines include diagnostic follow-up via electrocardiogram (ECG) only for youth showing warning signs or family heart history, which are often overlooked by youth, parents and their medical practitioners alike.
National Youth Heart Screening Day partners will be using a 12-lead ECG for all screening participants. An ECG is a quick, painless and non-invasive test that measures the heart’s electrical activity. It can identify most conditions that may lead to sudden cardiac arrest/death. ECG results are read by a physician and shared with the parent/guardian unless the participant is 18 or older.
Sudden cardiac arrest is caused by a heart abnormality you’re born with or it can develop as you grow. That’s why guidelines recommend repeated screening, especially if the youth is experiencing warning signs and symptoms, or if your family heart history among siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents changes.
National Youth Heart Screening Day is also a learning opportunity for a family’s regular assessment of warning signs and risk factors to better manage their youth’s heart health and interaction with their medical provider. Find more information here.
Call-Push-Shock is a national collaborative movement to motivate laypersons who witness a sudden cardiac arrest to immediately call 911, start hands-only CPR and use the nearest automated external defibrillator (AED). Screening participants will get hands-on experience delivering compressions and using an AED to save a life. Learn more about Call-Push-Shock here.
