Student athlete dies Monday at Reidsville High School

EDEN — Rockingham County Schools officials reported that Reidsville High School 10th-grader Shakiya Wilson, 15, died on Monday from a “cardiac event” during warm-up exercises before track practice.

“A beloved member of our school community, tragically passed away,” the school district said in a news release. “Our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies go out to Shakiya’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts are with them as they navigate through this profound loss.”

The death prompted the school district to dispatch its Crisis Team to RHS, a group that includes grief counselors, psychologists and support staff, the release said.

“We are committed to offering all possible assistance to those affected by this devastating loss for as long as necessary,” said Sean Gladieux, director of safety and public information for the district.

“We actually met with the staff this morning at Reidsville High School and dedicated our school psychologists, counselors and our behavioral health specialists full availability — not just today — but through the weekend … to be there for our students and staff if they need any of our assistance to get through this unfortunate tragedy,” Gladieux said.

No funeral details were available on Tuesday morning.
