Southern University Track and XC student athlete dies unexpectedly

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – “He hadn’t even touched the ceiling yet. He had a lot left in him.”

Those were the words of Southern University’s track and field head coach Teremine White.

After finishing his freshman year and spending the summer off-campus Jaguars runner Tommy Thomas Jr. died unexpectedly on Aug 5.

The student-athlete was only 19 years old.

“It was one of my coaches end up calling me and we did some research,” said White. “It was confirmed that it was him and it’s just unfortunate.”

Coach White recognized Thomas Jr. as an outstanding athlete and praised his progress on the oval.

“I know that he was really going to have a breakout year this year,” explained White. “He really learned a lot towards the back end of this past season. I was really looking forward to him coming back and doing some great things this year.”
