Columbia Middle School athlete dies weeks after collapsing

EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Several weeks after collapsing during a basketball game, a Columbia Middle School student has died.

“We regret to inform you that we received notice today that a student, Montrile Rouse Jr., has passed away,” parents were told Monday in a letter from the Columbia County School District.

Montrile collapsed Nov. 1 during a basketball game between Columbia and Lakeside middle schools.

“Death at any age can be difficult to understand,” parents were told in the letter. “We may feel a variety of emotions such as shock, sadness, confusion, or even anger. What is most important is that we care for and support each other.”

A parent told News 12 that Montrile fell over during the game that was being played at Lakeside, and “everyone thought he was having a seizure and then was completely lifeless.”

The witness said it appeared a defibrillator had to be used on the student before he was transported away.

“It was so scary,” the parent said. “It affected so many people along with players.”

A counseling team will be available to meet with Columbia Middle School students to help them with any feelings they may be having, the district said. Families with immediate concerns for their child outside of school hours can reach out to the Georgia Crisis and Access Line by dialing 988.

Staff members at the school can contact the Employee Assistance Program for free sessions by dialing 855-387-9727.
