Tristan “Axel” Ruiz, a band member at Ashbrook High School in North Carolina, died after suffering a medical emergency and going into cardiac arrest during a Friday night football game. The cause of the medical emergency remains unclear. His death comes just months after North Carolina enacted the Smart Heart Act, which requires public schools to establish cardiac emergency response plans and provides $4 million to place additional AEDs on school campuses statewide.
