SAN ANTONIO – A 16-year-old Stevens High School junior died early Wednesday morning after he passed out during an off-season athletic practice on Tuesday, school officials said.

The student, who has since been identified as Jaren Troy Lawson, was assessed at the scene by athletic trainers before being transported by EMS to a hospital, where he died shortly after midnight.

His sister Zamira Lawson says she is still in shock that her little brother died after football practice and says she will fight to learn every detail about what happened.

“I don’t really know anything specific about the practices,” Zamira said. “I’ve never been to a practice. I’ve been hearing what they’ve been saying about the practices. I don’t know yet, but I will try my best to find out.

Officials with Northside ISD said the death occurred at the hospital, not on campus. The student’s coach accompanied him to the hospital and remained there for much of the evening.

The school principal has notified the school community, and an investigation is being conducted.

A parent of Jaren’s teammates says her son is traumatized after watching Jaren collapse while doing up downs during practice.
