Coroner: Claflin University student died after collapsing while playing basketball

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WIS) – Officials have provided new details after a Claflin University student died on campus over the weekend.

Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle said 21-year-old Savion Brown, of Charlotte, North Carolina, died on Sunday. According to Fogle, a call to 911 stated Brown collapsed while playing basketball in a gym on campus.

Fogle added that EMS arrived and rendered aid to Brown before he was taken to a hospital, where he later passed away.

Claflin confirmed Brown’s death in a statement on Sunday, identifying him as a senior computer science major.

In its statement, Claflin said Brown was a valued member of its community.

“His presence will be greatly missed,” the school said. “Please keep Savion’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Claflin said grief counseling is available for the Claflin community online and by phone at 833-484-6359. Counselors were also made available on campus on Monday.

Fogle said an autopsy is scheduled for later in the week.
