BAY CITY, MI – An eighth-grade Handy Middle School student who collapsed and died last month after getting off his school bus was on the phone with a friend when he fell to the ground, saying he was having chest pain and trouble breathing.
Hayden Lee Davis, 14, died on April 15 shortly after exiting his school bus. According to police reports obtained by MLive/The Bay City Times through a Freedom of Information Act request, Davis told his friend “he thought he was having a heart attack.”
Bay City Public Schools Interim Superintendent Rick Seebeck wrote in a statement the evening of Davis’ death that very few details were known about what happened.
The school bus the student exited was near MacGregor Elementary, in the 1800 block of Fitzhugh Street, at the time of the incident, and the student was on a sidewalk, according to the statement.
Students at MacGregor Elementary were kept inside the building and then exited on the opposite side of the school for pickup while emergency personnel arrived at the scene.
In the days following Davis’ death, more than $14,500 was raised for his family through a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses.

Police records obtained through FOIA shed more light on the incident, showing that officers responded to the scene just before 3 p.m. and found fire department personnel already there, performing CPR on Davis. He was taken via ambulance to McLaren Bay Region.
Police interviewed neighbors living near where the incident occurred, but none reported seeing anything abnormal.

Davis’ mother told police her son did not have any pre-existing medical conditions and did not take medications. She also said he had undergone a physical in the last year.
Police were told Davis died shortly after 4 p.m. An autopsy was done, but the cause of death was pending the results of a toxicology report. That report has not yet been completed.
