CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (Gray News) – A 17-year-old high school student died after he reportedly collapsed while playing basketball Friday night.

Cam Ward, a Rossview High School student, was playing in a pickup basketball game around 6 p.m. with his teammates, the Leaf-Chronicle reported.

His basketball coach Johnny Jackson said he collapsed while he was jogging back on defense.

He was rushed to a hospital but later died.

“When they got Cam out of the ambulance, they were still working on him,” Jackson shared. “They did all they could to revive him.”

Cam’s brother has also set up a GoFundMe to help pay for medical bills and other funeral arrangements. Many friends and family shared their love for Ward.

“Bless your family. Our family loved watching Cam play,” said Brent Gruver. “Always so much passion. Forever #5.”

“Travon and I are sending our deepest condolences to the entire family,” Lenisha Hilton added. “Heaven has gained a superstar.”

Ward’s cause of death was not immediately shared.
