‘She never came back home’: 7-year-old child dies after collapsing at after-school program

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE/Gray News) – An Indiana family is mourning the loss of their young child, who died suddenly last week.

Loved ones say 7-year-old Precious Lewis died after collapsing at an after-school care program at Potter’s Wheel, a nonprofit that offers programs for children.

“She never came back home,” Angel Lewis, Precious’s mother, said.

Staff members attempted life-saving measures before calling 911, but Precious did not survive.

Now, the family says they are desperate for answers on how she died.

According to the family, the coroner told them Precious had an enlarged heart, but they still have to wait a few more weeks for the full autopsy report.

Loved ones said they are trying to get the money together to give her a proper burial.

“We haven’t had a chance to honor her yet. Because I don’t know how to right now,” Barbara Franklin, Precious’ aunt, said. “I’m trying to get money together to bury her, and it’s hard.”

Family members described Precious as being a special girl.

“She was very smart,” Angel Lewis said. “She was outgoing, she loved to skate, she loved to draw; her favorite colors were pink and purple. She loved to dance, and she was always making TikTok videos.”

Franklin added, “Precious was as precious as her name. I’m going to miss her. I just don’t know what I’m going to do without the days I pass by there and she would run out to my car. It hurts.”

Potter’s Wheel said the team is devastated over the loss.

“We are heartbroken about the sudden loss of Precious. She was a bright, beautiful girl, full of life and potential. She will be deeply missed by the staff at Potter’s Wheel, who worked with her and her family,” the team shared in a statement.

“We have set up a dedicated giving site to collect funds to assist with funeral costs. 100% of contributions will benefit the family at this difficult time.”

Family members said they are planning to hold a funeral service for Precious on Saturday.
