KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 15-year-old girl has died after suffering a medical emergency inside a Piper High School classroom last week.

According to the teen’s family, on Thursday, April 24, Asia Green was in class when she told her teacher she couldn’t breathe.

The family told FOX4 that the teacher encouraged Green to use an inhaler, but it did not help.

Shortly after, the teen collapsed and hit her head, which the family said led to a staff member performing CPR while another escorted the students out the classroom.

The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department said first responders arrived at Green’s side in seven minutes.

Paramedics started advanced life support and took over CPR. Green died on Sunday at the hospital.

Green’s family said she had no history of heart issues; however, doctors told them she died from cardiac arrest.

David Stewart is Green’s brother and caretaker. Their mom died of cancer eight years ago. Stewart said she loved the outdoors and animals.

“My best friend. I believe that there’s not anyone else in the world that got to share the experience that we shared together as a brother and sister,” Stewart said. “She was more than my kid, she was more than my sister, she was more than anything. We did everything together.”

Last Thursday, he dropped off the 15-year-old at Piper high school. He said an administrator told him that Green was in class when she had trouble breathing. He also said one teacher started CPR and staff also grabbed an AED but she didn’t have a shockable pulse.

“I just miss her,” Stewart said. “I kept faith throughout the whole thing, just hoping she would wake up ’til the very end, and she never did and it’s just hard.”

The district said counseling and support service are available to students and staff. Stewart is working through his grief by starting the Asia Green Foundation in honor of his sister.

“I want to make sure that there is proper equipment for cardiac [arrest], a case on every floor, in every corner of every school and there is always someone ready to take care of a child or even a teacher that could possibly go into a cardiac arrest,” Stewart said.

In response to the tragedy, a spokesperson with the Piper School District issued a public statement about Green’s passing. It said:

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of a Piper High School student following a medical emergency on campus last week. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, and in accordance with privacy laws, we will not be sharing specific medical details.

Our staff responded immediately, and emergency personnel were on site within minutes to provide care. The student’s family was notified right away and has been surrounded with support.

This is an incredibly difficult time for our entire Piper community. Counseling and support services are being made available to students and staff as we navigate this heartbreaking loss together.

We extend our deepest condolences to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones. We ask for continued compassion, respect, and privacy for all those affected.

At this time, friends of the family have set up a GoFundMe to help with the funeral expenses. Stewart said his sister was an organ donor and has saved three lives.
