Northern Kentucky man performs CPR on brother after cardiac arrest on Christmas Eve

A Northern Kentucky man is on life support after suffering cardiac arrest on Christmas Eve.The 21-year-old’s brother found him unconscious and jumped into action, performing CPR until help arrived.

“I knew that I had to call 911,” said Corbin Kelley, 22.

It’s been six agonizing days for Kelley and his family, waiting for a miracle. On Christmas Eve, Corbin found his younger brother, 21-year-old Brayden, unconscious.

“He fell over in his computer chair and I had to pull him out and call 911,” Corbin said. “That’s when I started CPR.”

For seven minutes, Corbin performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Brayden was rushed to St. Elizabeth Hospital and is now in a coma.

“They said I saved him and I gave him a chance,” Corbin said.

During a cardiac arrest, every second matters. “If you were looking at what makes a difference between when someone’s heart stops and whether it ever starts again, having someone near them that knows how to do CPR is probably the single most important thing,” said Dr. Dustin Calhoun, Emergency Physician at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Corbin’s quick thinking gave his brother a fighting chance. A scan revealed Brayden has no damage to his heart.

“There’s a small amount of damage to his brain, and it kind of induces seizures a little bit, so that’s something we’re looking out for,” Corbin said.

Brayden’s family now holding onto hope, that he will wake up soon.

“We both had a Christmas present for each other that we haven’t opened, so I’m waiting for him,” Corbin said.
