BOSTON, Mass. (NEWS10) -A team from the Capital Sliders Volleyball Club was competing in the Boston Volleyball Festival when one of its male players went into cardiac arrest. As of today, that player is in critical condition according to the GoFundMe being shared by the club.
According to Boston Police, officers responded to the area of 415 Summer Street for a cardiac arrest report Friday night before 10 p.m. That’s outside the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center where the festival had been ongoing for two weekends.
As the tournament organizers, JVC Tournaments posted to its website simply stating, “of events that occurred” at the festival. It went on to read, “Out of respect for the privacy of the individuals and families involved, we are not disclosing specific details at this time.”
Capital Sliders plays out of Clifton Park and has six teams ranging in age 13 to 18. When asked about the cardiac arrest, the club responded saying, “Yes, this is true. We have a GoFundMe page set up for the family. Our hearts and prayers are with them!” No further information was given.
That GoFundMe has a goal of raising $50,000 to help the family care for their child. As of this article’s post time, the fundraiser has collected more than $40,000.
One club from Arizona told NEWS10’s Anthony Krolikowski that an AED was used on the court. According to AED.com, Massachusetts requires automated external defibrillators, “to be placed in schools, assisted living facilities, health clubs, and dentist offices.” An AED manufacturer called Avive adds that, “Sports coaches in the state are required to obtain certification in AED use and CPR to help protect their athletes in case of a cardiac emergency.”
