INDIAN LAKE, Ohio (WKEF) — The Indian Lake School District is mourning the death of an 11-year-old student. The district took to Facebook on Monday to let the community know that a sixth grader, Shawn Humphrey, unexpectedly died on Sunday.
The post states that Humphrey was new to the district, but his parents have ties to the area.
Now, the community is working to find ways to wrap its arms around the family.
“There’s nothin’ we can do to fill that void, but there’s just things that we can do, as a community, to try to help make it easier, if you will. If that’s even possible,” Chief Michael Thompson, of the Washington Township Police Department in Logan County said.
A classmate decided to ask people to honor Humphrey during the upcoming boys basketball game on Thursday by wearing t-shirts with Humphrey’s name.
“Knowing Reed Cascioli, which is the student that came up with this, I’m not shocked at all. I think that just the resilience and the sense of community that we have here at Indian Lake, especially since we went through the tornado, I’m honestly not shocked at all,” said Chief Thompson.
After hearing the idea, the police department decided to add to the gesture by donating $10 for each student who wears a t-shirt to Humphrey’s family.
Now others in the community want to match that.
“We didn’t expect, you know, the Police Officer’s Association, for anybody to step up and match it, but to have the people who have stepped up is just huge,” said Chief Thompson.
The chief wants the family to know that the department and community are here for them.
Village of Lakeview Mayor Elaine Fagan-Moore sent Dayton 24/7 Now a statement that says:
“I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy to the family members of Shawn. I will continue to keep the family in my prayers during this time of grief.”
The district will have counselors available for students and staff when school resumes, and Chief Thompson said the school resource officer will also be available.
According to the obituary, the funeral service for Humphrey will be held on Sunday, Feb. 1, at Shoffstall Funeral Home in Lakeview. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m., and the funeral services will start at 3 p.m.
