ATLANTA (WANF/Gray News) – A high school football player died Wednesday after experiencing a medical emergency at practice the day prior.
According to the DeKalb County School District, 15-year-old Mikah King, a sophomore at Arabia Mountain High School, was taken to the hospital and died hours later.
“I know I’m going to miss him because that was my day one,” Jordan Hollie, Mikah’s best friend, said.
Hollie and Mikah have been best friends since kindergarten.
“He’s a generally funny, goofy person,” Hollie said.
Hollie said Mikah played offensive guard and defensive tackle at Arabia Mountain High School, while he plays football at Southwest DeKalb High School.
“He loved [football] as much as I did,” Hollie said. “He was my practice partner. He would push me to be better.”
The school district said it will have grief counselors available to support students and staff.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and school during this difficult time,” a district spokesperson said.
No other details were provided, including Mikah’s cause of death.
In 2019, an Arabia Mountain dancer died after collapsing on the track during a training exercise.
