Brandon High School students face tragedy after football player’s sudden death

The Brandon High School community is kicking off the fall semester facing a tragedy — the sudden death of a student and football player.

“He was just a good kid. He just wanted to be a part of the team. He was just a good young man and a good teammate,” said Rickey Neaves, Mississippi High School Activities Association executive director.

According to the Rankin County Coroner David Ruth, Phillip Laster Jr., 17, collapsed around 4:30 p.m. Monday while members of the team were working out. Ruth said Laster died at a local hospital.

“This so happened to have been summer workout. Our official practices don’t begin until Aug. 8,” Neaves said.

Even during the summer, coaches are required to take extreme precautions, Neaves said.

“As far as water breaks, cold tubs are available. And heat, temperature is regulated, and no pads at this time of year,” Neaves said.

Neaves said he’s shaken by Laster’s death, as schools across the state prepare for a new football season.

Ruth said it could be some time before results come in from the State Medical Examiner’s Office that will determine how Laster died.

Rankin County School District Superintendent Dr. Scott Rimes released a statement Monday.

“We are saddened and heartbroken by the sudden loss of Brandon High School student athlete Philip Laster. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time,” Rimes said. “In the days to come, RCSD will offer support to the family, Brandon High School team members, coaches, classmates, teachers and administrators as we all grieve the loss of Phillip.”
