Isabelle was a healthy, active teen who participated in gymnastics, soccer, and volleyball. Exceptionally strong and athletic from a young age, she advanced quickly in gymnastics and trained alongside older athletes.
She experienced three episodes of extreme shortness of breath during physical activity: once during a school jogathon and twice at soccer events. During each episode, she felt as though her throat was closing and that she might faint, although she never lost consciousness.
Her primary care physician referred her to a pediatric cardiologist, and Isabelle clearly described her symptoms. The evaluation consisted of a resting ECG only. She was cleared to continue sports, and no echocardiogram, stress test, or additional cardiac testing was performed.
On May 20, 2023, Isabelle collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest on a remote soccer field during a tournament. There was no accessible automated external defibrillator (AED) on the field. Bystanders began CPR immediately and continued for 25 minutes until EMS arrived, but without an early shock to restore her heart rhythm, resuscitation was not successful. Isabelle was just 13 years old.
Isabelle is remembered as a compassionate, artistic, and nature-loving young teen.
