A Gaston County student died after losing consciousness on a bus at Holbrook Middle School, a Gaston County Police Department press release said.
On Thursday at approximately 8 a.m., police and emergency services responded to the middle school where the student became unconscious and unresponsive.
Observer news partner WSOC TV said the student was 13. The name of the student is not being released at this time, the department said.
Life-saving efforts were made by the Lowell Police School Resource Officer working at the school, as well as Gaston Emergency Medical Services, the release said.
It also said the student was transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia where he later died.
While the student was unconscious, according to the release, the officers utilized Narcan in case there was some type of exposure to narcotics. But the Narcan did not have any effect on the student, indicating it was not likely a drug overdose.
Lowell Police is investigating the incident with assistance from the Gaston County Police Criminal Investigations Unit.
A preliminary investigation showed the child may have suffered from a previously unknown medical condition, but the department is waiting for the final results from the medical examiner, according to the release.
The release said there are no charges expected at this time.
