An 11-year-old has died on a school bus in Texas after suffering a medical emergency.
On Tuesday, Jan. 20, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a press release that they received a report about an “unresponsive” student on a Magnolia ISD school bus at around 7:38 a.m. local time.
“The bus was en-route to school when the medical emergency occurred,” the release read. “School nursing staff and Precinct 5 Constable personnel arrived on scene immediately and initiated CPR and other life-saving measures.”
They added, “Montgomery County Hospital District (MCHD) medics took over care upon arrival and transported the student to a local hospital.”
However, the student was pronounced dead despite efforts from emergency responders.
Detectives from the sheriff’s office began an investigation into the child’s death after arriving at the hospital.
According to officials, preliminary investigations indicate that the student “suffered a medical emergency related to a previously diagnosed medical condition.”
While authorities do not suspect any foul play, the cause of death for the student is yet to be released by the Montgomery County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Officials went on to express their condolences to the loved ones and teachers of the student.
“As parents ourselves, our hearts are heavy with sadness for the family and the entire Magnolia ISD community,” they wrote.
The leader of Magnolia ISD’s School Resource officer program, Constable Chris Jones, also paid tribute to the school’s late student.
“We stand in solidarity with the school, faculty, teachers, friends, and the many loved ones of this student,” Jones said in a statement. “This is an incredibly tough day for our community and the weight of this tragedy is felt by us all.”
Jones added, “I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the MCHD medics, hospital staff, MCSO Detectives, and all the first responders we have worked alongside today. Their professionalism and dedication during such a difficult time do not go unnoticed.”
“This is a heartbreaking day, and we lift this child and their family up in our prayers,” Jones continued. “We ask that the community joins us in respecting the family’s privacy as they navigate this unimaginable loss.”
The sheriff’s office added that they would not be releasing the child’s identity out of privacy for their family.
According to the district, per ABC13 Eyewitness News, the 11-year-old was a student at Bear Branch Intermediate.
On Tuesday, the district sent a letter to the school community.”It is with profound sorrow that I share the news of a tragedy in our school family. This morning, a BBI student passed away following a medical emergency,” the letter began, per the outlet.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our BBI Bears. Our hearts and thoughts are with the student’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” it added.
The letter went on to add that the news may be “difficult” for fellow students and staff to process and shared that counselors will be available at the school throughout the week.
