Josie Pethan, 11, was home sick from school a few weeks ago when her mother suffered a sudden cardiac emergency. Officials say Pethan “immediately knew something was wrong” and first contacted nearby family members for help, then called 911.
“While on the phone with dispatch, Josie calmly followed CPR instructions and began lifesaving efforts on her mother. She did not hesitate. She did not panic. She continued CPR until responders arrived and took over care,” a Facebook post from the Appleton Police Department reads.
Because of Josie’s quick thinking, courage and composure, a pulse was restored. Her mother was transported to a nearby hospital and survived the ordeal.
At just eleven years old, Josie faced a moment that would overwhelm many adults and rose to it. Her actions undoubtedly saved her mother’s life that day.
On Monday, Pethan received special certificates and challenge coins from the Appleton Police Department, Appleton Fire Department and the City of Appleton Government/Mayor’s Office.
Pethan and her family also had the chance to reunite with the officers, first responders and 911 dispatchers who helped guide Pethan through those critical moments.
“Josie reminds us that heroes don’t always wear uniforms. Sometimes, they’re eleven years old and answer the call when it matters most,” APD wrote. “We are incredibly proud of Josie and honored to recognize a young life-saver whose courage made all the difference.”
