On June 26, 2025, the Florida Legislature passed Senate Bill 1070, also known as the Second Chance Act, to help detect heart conditions that may lead to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in student-athletes and prevent needless tragedies. Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, the Second Chance Act requires that high school students (grades 9–12) in public and private schools who are participating for the first time in interscholastic athletic competition, practice, tryouts, or workouts sanctioned by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) receive a medical evaluation and an EKG prior to participation.
Overview
This workshop will review the "International Criteria" and provide a systematic approach for accurate ECG interpretation in athletes.
Workshop Objectives
The objectives of this training is to:
- Distinguish physiologic ECG findings from ECG abnormalities requiring more investigation.
- Accurately apply the International Criteria in 6 steps!
- Introduce key changes to the International Criteria based on the 2025 ECG Summit on ECG interpretation in athletes
- Outline the recommended secondary evaluation of specific ECG abnormalities.
