Maddie was born with a Atrial Septal Defect, a hole in her heart that caused her to struggle until she had open heart surgery at 10 months. The repair was a success and at age 3 she was cleared by her pediatric cardiologist. While participating in her high school Beta Club T-ball tournament, Maddie had a sudden cardiac arrest and was lost at age 14. The school’s gym AED was just 30 seconds away from where she laid, but absent of a cardiac emergency response plan, staff never retrieved it. It was 22 minutes from calling 911 until she was defibrillated. Her autopsy reported a healthy teen with no SCA indicators.
