A high school football player who was undergoing routine shoulder surgery died after doctors found a tumor on his heart, according to family and media reports.

Carter Stone, 15, was undergoing arthroscopic surgery when he went into cardiac arrest on Aug. 25, according to The Acorn. He was rushed from the Surgical Center of Westlake Village to Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, where he was pronounced dead.

His death has saddened the community of Agoura Hills, a town about 35 miles northwest of Los Angeles. A freshman at Agoura Hills High School, Stone’s death was confirmed in a Facebook post by his father, Brian Stone. “As some of you know, our son Carter passed away yesterday from an undiagnosed tumor on his heart.”

It was later discovered that he had a heart tumor related to an undiagnosed T-cell leukemia, Agoura head football coach Dustin Croick told the VC Star. “It was unknown and undetected prior to the surgery.”

Carter was an offensive lineman “who loved football,” Croick told The Acorn. “He was working his tail off.”

Carter’s parents Brian and Danielle, insisted the football team dinner should be held at their home before the next game, according to The Acorn.

In a Twitter post the team, @attownfootball, posted photos of Carter and his helmet, with this tribute: “A moment of silence for Carter. A lone helmet for 76. We sadly yet proudly honor our teammate and friend…Carter loved football and we loved him.”

“He was the epitome of everything that we’re about here at Agoura and our ‘A-Town’ culture,” Croick said of Carter, according to The Acorn.

Brian Stone said a memorial will be held soon to honor his son, according to his Facebook post.
